Archive for 2010

Today being the last day of 2010,before the clock strikes 12 and we see all the good and the bad memories, experiences fade away into a new phase, we celebrate. For the achievements we’ve made this year. I hope everyone is going to be resolute with their resolutions, and not make the same mistake they did every year. I”ve just return to a long piece I’ve been trying to learn; none other than Beethoven’s third movement of his 14th sonata. The moonlight. Now I kind of see the patterns and the ease in playing the devilish staircase of arpeggios. Try running twenty flights of stairs, thats just the thing. I’m going to show you three people playing the same thing.

-WILHELM KEMPFF

-DANIEL BARENBOIM

-VALENTINA LISITSA

Its all utterly crazy. The head of the craziness :BEETHOVEN. Kempff was playing a pace slower then the other two, probably of his age. He had extreme control over it and was the master in expressing of the three. Barenboim was playing at a fast pace , being extremely fine with the touches. Very classical and dynamic. It was like a finely cooked dinner that we all will enjoy. He was the better crafter and player out of three. I think his interpretation was the best. Lisitsa was playing at a very fast pace. In complete control of what she was playing. Tireless climbing the stairs with constant energy. Very dynamic and very exciting. Out of the three, she was the most technical one. All of these are in my opinion. Very interesting isn’t it ??

Hey everyone, hope everyone’s having a great day today. Hope no kids robbed any big man in a red suit with a white beard. So wishing everyone the seasons greeting!

Today me and my sisters actually went shopping for back to school items, like books, stationery, bags and others. I then realize the expense we make for the start of every school year. Its quite a pity that some students who go to school and sort of make a lot of trouble. They don’t realize how hard our money are earned.

Well, I promised a friend that I would promote him as a christmas gift. So everyone ,listen up. Follow Steven Liong on twitter!

So short update, It ends here. Merry Christmas everybody!

Nostalgia. A composition by Yanni, a greek , well, composer. But this post is not about that. Though it is related, because what I’m talking about are pieces that are so nostalgic, you think its sad, but its just too beautiful to be sad. These compositions are, however, not classical.

Thao Nguyen Xanh’s Sad Romance or also known as Sad Violin. It is a composition which was used in the Game “Final Fantasy”. You may be surprised its not done by a Japanese. I do find japanese game music amazing. Especially Kingdom Hearts.

Information about Thao, is quite obscure on the net. I suppose that is her. And the only information I can find is that she is Vietnamese. Its too bad not much is known, such an amazing piece written.

Yann Tiersen’s Comptine d’un autre été: l’après midi . Otherwise in English, Counting Rhythms in the Summer:After midday.

Born in France, he has received several Classical Music Training. You can tell some similarities in his composition with that of a french composer, Erik Satie. You should check out Je Te Veux.

Yann Tiersen was proficient in the Violin and could play several other instruments such as the piano, gutiar and the accordion. Tiersen, could sing as well.

He has solo albums and EP’s and he composes for film soundtracks as well. Sometimes, soundtracks of videogames and films are quite amazing , albeit, their simplicity.

I recently found a transcripted score of Sad Romance online and decide to give it some twists in arrangements.A piece that my sister ,May Cho, is learning for fun.

So it always always , boils down to a single conclusion. Classical music came first. The two above pieces, are extremely simple, in both structure and melody. But what do you know? It sounds amazing doesn’t it? It relates to you doesn’t it? Thats the art of music.

Most people dislike or find classical music boring. There’s only one simple explanation to it. They simply don’t understand.

To end this post. I’m going to leave you with a thought. What does music mean to you?

I”ve always found voicing certain passages extremely hard. Such as Bach’s fugues. With half of your hand playing staccato and the other few fingers playing legato or just simply holding on, its a difficult task. In this task range however, the most proficient pianist ever to voicing, is Glenn Gould.

Gould was well-known for various eccentricities, ranging from his unorthodox musical interpretations and mannerisms at the keyboard, to aspects of his lifestyle and personal behavior.

He ALWAYS sat very low on the keyboard and had the idea of pulling the keys instead of pushing them downwards. Using the theory at which pulling is easier than pushing. This gave him the ability to control the notes extremely well.

Gould died at an early age due to a stroke. If he was still alive, he wouldn’t be playing piano anymore because he planned to abandon it at the age of 50 to concentrate on studio recording.

According to the wikipedia entry, he was a very anti social person. He disliked socializing and often avoid even hand shakes. Once, he received a good pat on the back, but he accused the person as it affected his ability to play and perform.

According to him, he was the last puritan.

I’ve heard that there will be a Lunar Eclipse on the 20th of December, which is today. It will appear on 1.40 am. Tho I’m not sure about the time in asia, the news came from canada. Strangely there were also meteor showers today.

Maybe a little Moonlight sonata???
